EYE-OPENER:  (unedited)

Good Morning!  This time in EYE-OPENER:

1) "Trustee Time & Talent" November 13th

2) National Children's Book Week November 15-21, 2004

3) "Dewey or Don't We Librarians' Cookbook" Published

1) "Trustee Time & Talent" November 13th:  Register now for a brand new board development workshop designed especially for trustees.  "TRUSTEE TIME & TALENT" is coming up on November 13th at Milford Public Library & Community Center.  I presented this program in Carroll in August; November 13th offers a second opportunity for the northern-most libraries.  Here's the link to online registration:  http://www.nwils.lib.ia.us/class.html ;  And here's a description:

"TRUSTEE TIME & TALENT"  presents three key aspects of using trustees' time and talent to greatest advantage: (1) recruiting prospective trustees to fill vacancies; (2) ideas for keeping trustees actively engaged in meaningful, role-appropriate tasks; and (3) retraining trustees through ongoing educational opportunities.  Ideas will encourage boards to focus on "Big Picture" issues and on their role as advocates..."

I've taken this program on the road in recent months: to Coralville in April, to Urbandale in July, and to Carroll in August.  Here's what previous audiences have said:
"...I learned how important active trustees are to the success of a library"
"...so many of the areas covered will be beneficial to our board"
"...this should be required of all trustees; we all need our responsibilities defined"
"...this was my first meeting as a trustee--excellent information"

Flyers were mailed to all N.W. board presidents in late September.  The cost is $15.00, which includes workshop handouts, AM coffee & donuts, and a catered lunch.  There will be door prizes too!  This program is funded in part by a grant from the Iowa Library Trustees' Association.  Please discuss this at your October board meetings and make plans to send at least 1 representative from your boards.  If you can't register online, just give us a call--that works too;-)  Hope to see a good-size crowd there!  Please call with questions...thanks.

2) National Children's Book Week November 15-21, 2004:  It's not too early to put plans in motion to celebrate National Children's Book Week, coming up November 15-21.  Since 1919, educators, libraries, and bookstores have celebrated National Children's Book Week during the week before Thanksgiving.  Join the party and share the joy of reading in your local libraries by using this year's theme "LET'S BOOK."

A wonderful assortment of decorative posters and promotional materials are available for ordering through The Children's Book Council--posters, streamers, bookmarks, and more.  In fact, a new bookmark this year features a poem by actor John Lithgow entitled "I Need A Good Book."  (Lithgow is also a children's author; his new book released this year is called "A Lithgow Palooza: 101 Ways to Entertain and Inspire Your Kids")  To order National Children's Book Week materials from The Children's Book Council, visit their website: www.cbcbooks.org  or call 1-800-999-2160 for a full-color catalog.

3) "Dewey or Don't We Librarians' Cookbook" Published:  For those of you who didn't have a chance to see this at the ILA Conference last week, this is a brand new cookbook edited by Susan Henricks from Dubuque Public Library.  It's a 281-page book, replete with 374 recipes submitted from 23 states and 4 countries.  The recipes were contributed by library staff in public, academic, school, and special libraries.  In addition to being presented in Dewey Decimal order with Library of Congress Subject Headings, there are hundreds of quotes throughout the book on what authors and writers have had to say about food and cooking throughout history.

The "Dewey or Don't We Cookbooks" sell for $15.00 plus shipping.  (shipping charges: 1 book = $4.00 / 2 books = $5.00 / 3 books = $6.00.  Email for a quote if shipping more than 3 books)  Proceeds from the cookbook sales go to The Iowa Library Association Foundation Endowed Speakers' Fund.  Make checks payable to: Susan Henricks, 3120 Shiras Avenue, Dubuque, IA 52001.  For more information, email deweycooks@mchsi.com

More next week...thanks for reading!

Advocatvs Diaboli: This term has come to mean anyone who argues a position that he does not believe in, simply for the sake of arguing and/or promoting discussion; or to present a counter argument for a position he does believe in to another debater, for the purpose of testing the quality of the counter argument and identifying weaknesses in his own argument.

Q&A:
In (a certain county) County, (a certain city)  is incorporated, has ### population and contracts with (another city) for full service at less than $1 per cap.  County does about $21 for unincorp residents and cities average 43 for residents.

What should (a certain city)
According to a chart from Department of Management the taxable value is $3,8##,###  times 0.0000675=$2##  is being collected from people by city

be collecting?  Does $1 per cap meet the Code requirement for cities with no library?
The Code of Iowa requires the city to provide for library services and to collect at least 6 3/4 cents/$1000 valuation, the code does not require the city to pay for the service.  It is a contract if the city can get a contract for less than it collected it wins; keeps the difference.  If the public library provides service at no charge the city wins bigger.

You were very into the county contracts so hope you have some expertise to share here too.  This would be city with no library contracting with city with library and thereby having full access to all libraries.

Google Results Difference Between Life Or Death

When was the last time you Google-stalked yourself? It might have been back on September 29 when the NewsBreak editor's note discussed the practice. Several of you e- mailed about what you found when you typed in your own name; thanks again for sharing the surprises you found.

Solipsistic Google-stalking is a bit of a parlor trick, but this week it took on much more serious connotations. In

a story that didn't get as much U.S. press attention as it should have, kidnappers in Iraq freed an Australian

journalist after they verified his identify with a Google search. The Google results confirmed that John Martinkus

was in fact a freelancer working for Dateline SBS, a production of the Australian Special Broadcasting Service.

The kidnappers had suspected that he was a U.S. contractor, CIA agent, or an informer for U.S. interests.

My guess is that every foreign correspondent, NGO worker, and government contractor on assignment in a war zone has checked their own search results within the last 48 hours.  Appearing in the top ten results isn't just a marketing objective anymore. Note to the accounting departments at CNN and KBR: you're going to see "keywords" as a line item on some expense reports this month.

Building Consulting Grants

The State Library allocates Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds to provide Iowa libraries with building consultation.  These grants allow librarians to get professional advice from impartial consultants who provide guidance and recommendations to library staff, city officials and the community on the extent and complexity of a building project.  The building consulting grants have been funded by the State Library since fiscal year 1994.  Grants of up to $2,500 will be awarded as funds are available. A library that has received the entire $2,500 grant is not eligible for another one.
