The Nation has an interesting forum on humanitarian intervention that consists of 12 essays detailing what humanitarian intervention is and how it relates to events of the last 10 years or so, specifically relating to Iraq. . .I've only read the first six but I highly recommend numbers 4 and 6. . .(via The Filibuster, a really good lefty blog that I enjoy reading regularly)

Do the French go out of their way to piss us off?. . .It sure looks that way. . . I find it hard to believe they could have unintentionally done that. . .

And speaking of pouting, I heard a story on NPR today talking about how the US government in general and the farmers of America in specific were upset at an EU ruling saying that genetically modified crops could be sold in the EU only if they were clearly labeled as being genetically modified. . .I'm trying to come up with the leg the goverment is standing on when it claims that this unfairly punishes America's farmers. . .Umm since when do the governments of other countries owe anything to our farmers/workers/unions/steelworkers etc?

Don't foreign countries have the right to do anything they damn well please when it comes to their markets? If they don't want to sell our stuff, they shouldn't have to. . .Europeans are a lot more concerned with genetically modified crops and since it's their countries, they have a right to do anything they want with items sold there. . .it's not like America is the most fair market in the world when it comes to imports. . .

UPDATE: Here's a NY Times link detailing the above. . .I find this quote:

"The European Union's practice may lead other countries to block trade by imposing detailed information, traceability and labeling requirements and prompt a host of new nontariff barriers just at a time we are trying to stimulate world trade," Richard Mills, the spokesman for the United States Trade Representatives, said in a statement released today

rather enlightening. . .it sounds to me like we're trying to stimulate world trade as long as it's good for us. . .which sounds just like the Bush administration. . .so I guess I shouldn't be surprised but I still am. . .

The Justice Department pouts about the ruling allowing Zacarias Moussaoui to interview a captured Al Qaeda suspect. . .whether he wins or loses, I think Moussaoui will have turned this trial into a circus. . .Is he that important to have this happen? I highly doubt it. . .I think this shows a systemic effort on the current administration to hide as much as possible from as many people as possible. . .and that's disgusting. . .

Steven at Poliblogger and John Lemon at Barrel of Fish write about Howard Dean's chances in the presidential race. . .I personally don't think any of the dems have a chance to win against Bush both for money reasons and political reasons. . .clearly, Bush will outspend any Democratic candidate but perhaps more importantly, whoever wins the Democratic primary is going to have to be far enough to the left to get the votes necessary to do so. . .they're going to have a hard time switching back to the center to overcome Bush in the general election. . .

John writes about how Dean will actually be bad for Republicans because it will be such a landslide. . .and I have to agree, mostly with the landslide part. . .I can see Dean winning the primaries just because he's fairly liberal enough to win a bunch of support but in the general, that liberal streak is going to seriously hurt him. . .

I think it's awesome that he's running primarily an Internet campaign and I'm actually starting to think I'd like to vote for him in the general but I just don't see him with much of a real chance against a very centrist, and like it or not, well-liked George Bush. . .
