Divalproex as Effective as Olanzapine in Bipolar Mania
Medscape Medical News story - "For the treatment of mania of bipolar disorder, both divalproex (Depakote) and olanzapine (Zyprexa) were equally effective in a randomized, double-blind trial reported in the December issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. ACLU Sues in Death of Homeless Mentally Ill Man (Florida)
Story in The Ledger (Lakeland FL) - "The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a wrongful-death suit on behalf of the daughter of a homeless schizophrenic man shot to death by Miami police last year. ...The suit, which seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages, charges that the city has repeatedly killed and injured mentally ill people because of a lack of training."
Mental Health budget facing cut (California)
Mendocino Beacon story on cuts to Mendocino County Mental Heath due to California's budget deficit. The story notes that, "Ironically, such cuts may ultimately end up costing more money than they save, according to Mental Health Director Beth Martinez. Cuts or no cuts, the law says certain services must be provided. So when funding is reduced, Mental Health must take money from other, community-based programs in order to pay for those mandated by the state."![]()
