Interesting what a few incriminating photographs can do! As of this morning, I've had conversations with the town manager, the head of the town's environmental commission, and the 2 local newspapers regarding the story yesterday about town employees dumping paint and other nasty stuff into the creek that runs through the middle of town.
This whole exercise took less than 30 minutes of my time, to take photos, build a web page with iPhoto, and send a couple of e-mails. The net result should be that the creek gets cleaned up and some town employees get a lot smarter about the environment, and Leesburg is much better for it.
I wish everyone would take 30 minutes to follow up on an issue that is bothering them, something they're concerned about, or something they'd like to see changed. I think most people forget that they have an enormous amount of leverage at the local level to effect change. The disillusionment with government on the national level seems to demotivate people to do things as simple as cleaning up their own back yards.
