Thoughts about Web Services
  • Re-tooled ASP apps in RPC clothing?
  • Bad things
    • problems with service discovery
    • no standard data model
    • relatively weak parameter typing
    • no inheritence
    • poor documentation
    • not friendly to non-programmers
      • not visible at the level of today's web
      • no standard tools for manipulating them
    • ad hoc security
  • Good things
    • easy for developers to implement and modify
    • makes it possible to expose apps to the internet not normally considered "networkable"
    • works seamlessly with existing standards
    • accpetable performance levels for async transactions
    • lots of components exist for building web services apps
