So Drew Davidson (one of the Ognl guys) is going to be releasing version 2.3.0 very soon (possibly today) which will include type conversion both to and from beans. This is great news, and means that Ognl will be the first such tool to support this kind of feature. I personally find it odd that no one else had thought of this before! Jason Carriera mentioned that I check out JBeans and while it supported most of the type conversion I'd want, it had no concept of type conversion going the other way. In thea meantime, Drew is working on Ognl to have even better performance, so I think Ognl will be what I'll end up recommending for XWork.
