according to this story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3517319.stm, a 500m asteroid missing the earth by 32 times the distance between the earth and the moon "posing no danger to us whatsoever". holy cow! that seems pretty darn close to me, relatively speaking. better get that asteroid defence system up-and-running!
