Leading Via Blog

Let's see how fast Jon's list of CxO bloggers expands. I'll bet it's not (unfortunately) very fast.

CxO bloggers. I'm particularly interested in C[ETI]Os who are using blogs to communicate goals, strategies, and perspectives. So I've added a feature to this blog that helps keep track of these CxO bloggers. ... [ Source:  Jon's Radio]

Please View My Ad

How many times am I going to respond positively to a request to view an unsolicited ad? Zero.

Pop, Pop, Pop Go Those Web Ads. Pop-up ads may be annoying, but they're not going away. Some sneaky advertisers are even trying to get around ad-blocking software. By Joanna Glasner.

[...] As more Internet users adopt ad-blocking software, advertisers are now looking for ways to get around it, Panicware's Fresenius said.

The makers of one application engineered for this purpose, AntiAdBuster, claim their script will detect if a person is using ad-blocking software. Once it detects the ad- blocking software, it sends a message asking the person to turn it off and check out the ad.

Fresenius said she doubts many Web users find the offer appealing. [ Source:  Wired News]

JR's Quick Course on Manila Intranet

I understand most of what John says here, but I could really use some more detail on how it's so easy to create directories of resources using Radio's outliner. To date, nothing about the outliner is easy for me, and I'd love to know more about this.

How to rework your Intranet with Manila and Radio.  Lot's of people are asking me how they can provide a facelift to their Intranet and/or build an internal K-Log network (with Radio and/or Manila).  I thought I would provide some of the information that I get asked often:

[...] Radio ($39.95 a desktop)

1) Radio provides a way for individuals to publish a personal weblog to a Radio community server running Manila or via FTP to an account on a standard webserver.  It also allows individuals to both syndicate their site and subscribe to news.

2) Radio can be used to create directories of resources on a Manila server.  It is a very easy process using Radio's outliner.  These directories can be linked together easily to create a master directory of resources with subsections managed by different individuals.

Basically, with Manila and Radio it is possible to build a large full featured Intranet on a single server that meets the needs of hundreds of individuals.  The two can also be used in concert to quickly build a K-Log network.  There is so much more, but this covers the basics. Can DynamicDNS Save Me Money?

From John's description DynamicDNS sounds like it eliminates the need to have a static IP from my ISP -- a $15/month tab I don't want to pay. Must check this out. Can the DynamicDNS save me that $15/month?

Radio tip:  Have a look at DynamicDNS.org.  Very easy to use service.  It is a way to get around dynamic IP addresses provided by ISPs to DSL and Cable customers.

Basically, I could set-up a domain through them (ie:  jrobb.dyndns.org or a variant on any of these domains) and have it redirect to the remote access page on my Radio desktop.  Of course, I would have to redirect my router/firewall to redirect all incomming traffic to the notebook running Radio.  This would allow me to publish, get news, and do everything I could do with Radio as if I was sitting in front of the machine it was installed on.
