Americans seem more willing to forfeit their personal and civil liberties, but they don't trust the Govt. either, reports the Wired. U.S. vs. Them provides a good ongoing commentary on this issue, laws like the Patriot Act, and the technologies that will be used for this. As information professionals we must become informed both about the laws and the technologies. Many of these digital technologies are invisible and like cataloging and systems work in libraries, will need a cadre of savvy professionals with good ethics if misuse and abuse are to be prevented. Many cities have passed symbolic resolutions against the Patriot Act, for example. Tucson isn't one, I'm afraid. Cambridge, Ann Arbor, Michigan...see the trend :-)
