Quite profound thoughts by Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit, further back in his weblog, regarding the very strange attitudes towards racism prevalent in much of the world, something that has often bothered me. It links very directly with the lead story on News24 earlier today, reporting that the South African delegation, along with those of Cuba, Russia, and a couple of others, had walked out of an anti-racism conference in Barbados, because White and Asian delegates had been barred!
While we're there, also this comment - seems to make sense to me; I really don't understand what the issue is, in Germany and elsewhere. Bush and his team seem to be doing all the right things, lining up domestic and international support, painstakingly building a coalition and a military strategy, but there's all this knee-jerk opposition, based on a fundamental misunderstanding of what he's about, and a cartoon-character stereotype of the man and his key advisors. Just my opinion.

John Simpson is back in Africa this week, revisiting the desperate plight of the Botswana Bushmen (San). and indicating that they are the victims of racism in Southern Africa.

"Tom Friedman in NYT" [Daypop Top 40]
Great comment by one of the best commentators around - going beyond the sterile arguments about war or not, and urging US politicians to focus on the issues that really matter. Bravo Tom!
[Aside: What a lot I've found to comment on today, after a period of silence on this weblog! That News Aggregator is a wonderful piece of technology, as is Google News, which now gets fed in illustrated form. Amazing!
And I haven't even started launching into all the South African and Greek news yet, let alone dealing with my bulging email inbox.]

Here's an authoritative statement about what's going on in the world, by probably the most influential woman in the world, Condoleezza Rice.

Brawling With Barbra Online [New York Times: Technology]
A real cat-fight going on-line between Barbra Streisand and Matt Drudge, involving misspellings and fake Shakespearan quotations. All good, dirty fun.
Meanwhile, another aspect of the same issue is revealed by the Sunday Telegraph, in an article headlined "Hollywood Goes to War" - now this is not the war against file-swapping, but rather refers to the fact that the industry is split down the middle regarding the possibility of war with Iraq!
And it seems that many US Democrats who were anti-war in 1991, now support George W, perhaps splitting the party, just weeks before an important mid-term election. (link from Instapundit - the following item is worth reading, also.)

The Giant Black Sable rediscovered
A good news environmental story from the Sunday Telegraph today. How great that the most magnificent antelope on the planet survives, and that Angola's once-great game reserves, devastated by decades of civil war, are being restocked.

How and Why the Internet Broke [Daypop Top 40]
Oops! Amazing how apparently trivial errors, and classic failures like inadequate testing can still bedevil the systems we all depend on. I gave up surfing on Thursday evening, because I just couldn't seem to get throught to the sites I wanted - this explains why.

IBM's ThinkPad turns 10. The computer maker's notebook design set a standard for other designers to follow. Where does it go from here? [CNET News.com]
Happy Birthday Thinkpad, and many happy returns!
I have been personally responsible over the last 8 years for purchasing three of the 15 million Thinkpads sold, and in all likelihood, my next PC will also be a Thinkpad, this time with wireless network access, and a much bigger hard drive - I have spent a large portion of the day backing up and deleting files so that I can stay within my 10GB drive (my first one had a 170MB drive, which I later replaced with a 1.2GB). Thank goodness Moore's Law and its derivatives enable us to keep up with expanding storage and processing requirements - 18 months ago, I thought I would never use up 10 gig, but that was before I got into digital photography, and I've hardly scratched the surface of downloading and recording music!
