The Roblog!
A forum for distributing news, insights and musings about our life in Greece, an exile's view of South Africa, other topics of interest, and for exploring this new medium and my own creativity. Maybe make some new friends and/or enemies? Let's see.

Another story from TIME, which I have not covered (yet - there's plenty more to come on this subject):  preparations for the 2004 Olympics in Athens.  Good coverage;  Athens really is being transformed, the whole city is a vast construction site, the impact on already-chaotic traffic systems is horrendous, but at the end of it, there will be a new city.  Already, there are huge improvements

As to whether they will be ready in time - I venture to be optimistic.  The Greeks do things differently to most people, and put a lot of obstacles in their own path, but generally get the job done.  I think the answer is that they'll be ready enough.  They have been pragmatic in scaling down facilities in sports which Greeks do not follow, and which will not be used after the games (like field hockey), but have focussed on truly splendid facilities for sports that they excel at and follow avidly, like track & field, wrestling and weightlifting.

So, it will be different to Sydney and Atlanta, but I have no doubt it will be special.  let's look forward to it.

And I believe that Cape Town and South Africa missed a huge opportunity to galvanise and renew the city and the country by losing the bid to Athens, back in 1997.  Certainly the disgusting political shenanigans we have seen in the Western Cape this year would not have happened if the responsibility of preparing for the Games had been there - it has certainly focussed Greek minds.

Got my print copy of TIME Magazine this morning (October 14 issue, takes time to percolate out to the Ionian islands, and onto Sakis the postman's motor scooter - he has 5 villages to look after, so delivery is sometimes sporadic).  The magazine updates several stories that I have covered, sometimes in more elegant and polished prose than mine, but not always.

For instance, the Blair/Clinton double-act in Blackpool, which I covered here.

Then, TIME has discovered the Ketchup girls (they must have been reading my weblog), but their review is a little jaundiced.  Never mind that the words are gibberish, Mr Chu, what about the rhythm and exciting summer ambience that I raved about?  They are still dancing on the tables at Rory's bar, and last night I sat behind two 70 year-olds in another bar who started twitching and jiving in their seats when the video came on.  It's catching.  So what if it's a one-hit wonder - so was The Macarena.  Let's just enjoy it while it's here, and remember it always as the song that defined the summer of '02.

CNN has more on this story.

Jeff Chu also confirms he lacks a sense of humour in his ultra-serious coverage of The World's Funniest Joke, which I came across on Daypop Top 40.

Finally, I got it all wrong about Paula Radcliffe in this post, and I owe her an apology:  I should have remembered that: Radcliffe is one of the sport's leading antidrug campaigners, and runs with a red ribbon on her vest to show her opposition to drug abuse, and that she has publicly protested about other drug cheats in athletics.

Sorry, Paula, and well-run in Chicago.  Hope you're enjoying a nice break from serious running now. Have a few good meals - looks like you need fill out a bit.

Carnival of the Vanities #4 has been published  (here and here), including a modest link to yours truly.  I hated what I had written when I tested the link.  Clumsy writing, needs polishing.  What on earth was I thinking about when I submitted it?  What on earth was the bigwig thinking about when he accepted it?  I guess he challenged my ego and vanity very cleverly when he emailed me.

Let's see what happens.  I don't think this humble blog is in any kind of shape to receive lots of visitors.

Fascinating discussion and set of links to follow.  Really gets one thinking.
