The Focus Moves to Zuma
In the wake of Schabir Shaik's
inevitable conviction for fraud and corruption, the spotlight moves to
the man who was not on trial, but whose name has been inextricablty
linked with it, every agonising step of the way. Despite all the
attempted cover-ups, the besmirching of Bulelani Ngcuka, the posturing
of his backers in the ANC, Jacob Zuma is exposed as a corrupt and fraudulent individual. The SA papers are united
in calling for his resignation or dismissal. It will be
fascinating to see how the affair is handled by the ANC and its
leader. Sadly, it is likely to come to nought. Given
Mbeki's steadfast support for the thug and criminal Mugabe, what ope is
there that he will pull the rug from his chosen successor? It is
highly likely, too, that Zuma is not the only corrupt one - he is the only
senior figure who has been exposed to date.
Later: the ANC's dilemna.
