Sporting Recent Podcast Wood

I don't post much about podcasting here. I started following Adam Curry's in September and branched out from there. {Aside: If Radio UserLand supported post backdating, I'd fill in the old podcast-related posts from voice notes I made at the time. Backdating, though possible through an unsupported tool and requiring subsequent damage control scripts, is difficult and messy. All because of an incorrect assumption in the core product design. Bah! Humbug!} Now? There's always a 'caststack ready for my listening pleasure. Thanks to Dave Winer for the foundation upon which Adam, and all the subsequent iPodder developers, built the podcasting castle.

Recent Wood #1: The Gillmor Gang episode of 10/22/04 with Adam Curry, Dave Winer, and most members of Firesign Theatre. During the one-hour interview, Firesign quickly transitioned from podwhat? to Sign Us Up! They instantly understood, and were ready to use, the new media distribution channel based on RSS!

  • Boing!

Recent Wood #2: Triggered by Ray Edwards from RadioBrothers. Somehow I missed the earlier episodes. Luckily, I started with the 11/03/04 episode, in which Ray counters an article in the 10/29/04 issue of FMQB.

"Radio Goes Where An iPod Can’t ... Media Positioning founder Keith Cunningham names 20 things that aren’t cool about an iPod. What does that have to do with radio? Plenty!"

Ray counters almost every "can't" point with... "Podcast!" Ray, an old-school radio guy, soooo obviously gets it! Day job in radio, personal blog with podcasts.

  • Boing!

Ray also relates the head-in-sand attitude that still prevails in the terrestrial radio industry regarding satellite radio. "Competition? What competition?"

  • Bzzzzzzt! Thanks for playing, you're out of the game!

Meanwhile, at work, I'm told that RSS isn't too interesting yet because only one company in our industry uses it, along with one of our largest customers.

  • Sigh...
