South End Drive

Yesterday afternoon, we met with IT employees from the departments of Corrections, Transportation, and Public Safety.  Each department group certainly has a unique personality, but they are all doing some good online things.  UDOT's commuterlink site has become an excellent resource for traffic watchers.  Public Safety is very engaged in the Homeland Security Project and increasingly involved in cooperative ventures with local government law enforcement to share information.  Corrections has developed the O-Track system to track offender data and has shared that as part of the Integrated Criminal Justice Information System (ICJIS) that is using XML to access data from multiple resources through a common interface.

After leaving the meeting I took a drive through the south end of the Salt Lake valley on my way to our State Surplus Property facility.  That kind of thing keeps me grounded in reality.  Rapid growth is continuing to occur.  UDOT has raised the speed limit on the Bangerter Highway (shown at right) to 60 miles an hour in recognition of the traffic flows that already occur.  Intel has a new research facility down there and high tech is the order of the day on the way back to Utah County.
