ImergeConsulting has provided a mini-whitepaper analysis of the Megapixel Enigma for Vendors Moving to Higher Resolutions. That is, upping the pixel count in the same size sensor may result in no better image quality and worse noise. Also many other aspects of the camera system need to be redesigned to keep up with the increased image size.
I had posted a link to an excellent resource that goes into extreme detail on a similar topic, Norman Koren's Understanding Image Sharpness, part 7.

Purpose |
VRlog provides news, developments and analysis of the virtual reality (VR) world from a nature photographer's perspective. Since I am not connected to or funded by any VR vendor, I intend to objectively appraise what's going on, and the direction VR is headed in. -- erik goetze
