At WWDC 2003, Apple demonstrated a new QuickTime codec associated
with Panther -- Pixlets: providing "studio-grade quality on a
personal computer." The new codec was designed for film quality
material shown at on ehalf HDTV resolution or 960x540. It features 48-bits of color data per pixel, more than any other codec. It offers no inter-frame compression and easy editing. Full screen, 24fps and stereo sound can be decoded on a 1GHz G4 Mac.

IMHO this is great. How long before we have the ability to display 48 bit VRs? Think what you could do with HDR source material if it could be presented in 48 bits!
