Don't read ideas that you might not agree with

Ernie says:

"Don't read ideas that you might not agree with." [Ernie the Attorney]
And then he goes on to say how ridiculous this idea is. If anything, you should read ideas that you don't agree with more than you read stuff you do agree with. Event if it doesn't broaden your perspective, it will make you better able to argue your case. (Smart Dems read all the GOP material they can get their hands on and vice-versa.)

With that said, I can maybe see a case for not wanting to send any money in the direction of your opponent. Some might see this as mailing a check to the Dark Side. (Visit your local library. Buy used.)

On Software and Copyrights
Amy Wohl:
"Copyright remains an inappropriate mechanism for protecting software because the right model would let IP owners do what Dave Winer does with his software -- let people develop on top of it or even create another version of it and do that legally -- while still protecting his right to collect revenue from the use of the software itself, should he choose to do so. Moreover, the copyright mechanisms -- and built-in rules for extending them, according to the owners' permissions -- should be built right into the software itself, complete with reporting and collection mechanisms." [amywohl News]

She's on to something here. Look at the huge software outfits (excepting Microsoft, though they're moving this way too). They run on subscriptions, support contracts, whatever you call it -- they essentially treat software as a service, not a product.

The Internet as a Secret Treehouse

Ernie says:

"The Internet may have been a childhood fantasy, and it was fun while it lasted. People shared a little too much, though. And that was bad."

[Ernie the Attorney]

And he's right. The wild west that was the Internet is gradually being tamed. (Maybe not so gradually.) We owe thanks to all the lawyers and legislators, but most of all to everyone that sat around and let it happen.

Smokers

I can't say I don't understand why people start smoking. I understand. But that doesn't mean it isn't stupid. I also can't say I don't understand why they don't quit. I understand that it is hard -- my dad must have quit smoking a dozen times before he gave it up permanently. (The fact that as children we would crumple up his hidden stash was fun; he couldn't get mad at us because he wasn't supposed to have them in the first place. Thanks Dad.) And I can't say that I don't understand how you can ignore the health effects. I know plenty of people who are fat, have high cholesterol, or have other diet/exercise related health problems who simply refuse to either eat better or exercise more. (Witness the rise in popularity of drugs like Prilosec and Lipitor.)

So what's my point? I didn't really have one. But here's something to think about: when you smoke, you stink. You smell as foul as someone with a glandular body odor problem. Your breath stinks. I will avoid you like the guy with incurable chronic halitosis. I can smell you from 15 feet. After you've finished smoking. (I'm not going to complain about your "exhaust fumes" while you're lit up, which I can detect from 100 feet at 55mph.)

Doe and Two Fawns

This morning in the backyard. I stood and watched them trim around the edge of the lawn. Had to shoo them away when they started heading towards the flowers, though.
