And another thing...

In addition to everything else: I forgot to mention that you have to accept a new license agreement!

Downloading security patches

BBC: "'But one of the really disturbing things is that people don't patch their software,' he said, urging users to download the latest updates from Microsoft's Windows Update site." [via Scripting News]

The reason people don't patch their software is because it is difficult to figure out what the heck to do! I went to Microsoft's security website. I found "MS02-044 Unsafe Functions in Office Web Components 2000, 2002 (Q328130)", which sounds like it might be the right one. It looks like my computer (Office 2000) is affected. But I'm not going to read the security bulletin -- it's 20 pages long. How about giving me the executive summary and a link? You have to hunt down about 20 pages before you find links to the patches. I select the one that looks like it's right for me. And I'm presented with garbled output. What gives? I use IE6, it's not like the browser is out of date. I click what looks like the right link and get a 4MB download. Good thing I've got a fast uplink at work. That would have taken 10 minutes to download at home... assuming my link didn't drop out halfway through it.

Honestly, I don't understand why people have to ask "why doesn't anybody install the patches?"

klogging roles

A discussion on klogging roles got me thinking. We have brokers and agents for many other kinds of property and services: stock brokers, real estate brokers, used car lots, salvage yards, temp agencies, etc. Why not knowledge? Google Answers provides answers to questions by hooking up the inquisitive with researchers who know how to find answers to sometimes tough questions. In an organization there's usually a couple of people who, even they don't have the answers, can point you to the person or resource that can give you the answer. This is what good librarians do, right?

  • Does this need to be formalized in an organization? (Is it even a good idea?)
  • To what extent can this be made electronic and/or automatic?
  • Other questions. (Still working on this.)
