I should really have started by introducing myself. I retired from a large platinum mining group in 2000 where I was responsible for value engineering, which, if you don't know, consists of all sorts of things that nobody else wants to do. This included corrosion engineering, or just rusting, and trying to get value out of things, which actually just meant getting things for the lowest price. So you can see why I retired! Now, I do my own things, things that I have wanted to do for years, like reading, writing and speaking to people. My interests are how to transfer all sorts of knowledge among all sorts of people.

When it comes to knowledge management, I am reminded of two related things. Firstly, as Karl-Erik Sveiby has said: "We know more than we think we know" and, secondly, how little of our brain capacity and capability we actually use. So, the challenges of knowledge management are how to know what we know and how to use more of our brain.  This applies both to us as individuals and as collectives, e.g. as an organisation. Just think, if we all knew what we know and if we were to use all of our brains, would we have the world as it is?
