Today I received my Orinoco Wireless Gold WiFi card.  I spent a few hours playing with it today, mostly spent on searching for information on the web.  I had read that installing the drivers that come with the installation CD could cause problems with Windows XP, so I was a bit hesitant about simply following the included instructions.

From my reading, I gathered that I should do the following:

  1. Stick the card into my laptop (a Dell C400)
  2. Allow Windows XP to recognize the card and install its driver
  3. Update the driver

The only question was, how does one install the driver?  After much playing around, and reading one particularly helpful article that I can't seem to find again, I think I did it.  I downloaded the current drivers from the Orinoco site; they arrive in a self-extracting EXE file.  After unpacking them, you can update the driver by going into its properties as normal.  My drivers are now at the recommended 7.42 level.

After updating the drivers, I rebooted my machine.  When it came up, it said that it had found a wireless network... strange.  Apparently, someone else on my block has a WiFi network, though it is access-restricted.  But it's neat that the card just picked it up.  I can't wait to go to New York City this weekend and try it out in Bryant Park.
