Briefs on the web, part 2

We have always been a strong proponent of making briefs available online.  That is why we were glad to see the venerable LLRX offer The Skinny on Briefs, an article listing all known sources of these materials.  For some reason, however, Michigan's initiative is not mentioned.

An update on VRS

Today's Free Press has an amazing story of the case reported on this page last week.  It details the patient whose foot infection drew international attention, the podiatrist who treated her and apparently cured the infection despite pronouncements that she would inevitably lose the foot and part of her leg, and a hospital which tried its damnedest to keep her out of its operating rooms altogether:

Officials were worried about the germ's spread, which "could close down the hospital, or part of it," Pupp acknowledged.

The compromise was to treat Carter as an outpatient. She entered through a back door of the hospital on July 2, and was taken to Operating Room 9 on a gurney, a soft stretcher, rather than on an expensive operating table the hospital later might have to destroy. An entire wing of a surgical floor was shut while Pupp operated on Carter.

The new evil empire

"It is ironic that despite the strong commitment to democracy in Islam, most Muslims today are living in dictatorships.  The Muslim people want freedom. . .  Much like the people of the communist world of the past, the Muslim people today are hostages in totalitarian regimes [like those] that flourished during the days of the Cold War." - Benazir Bhutto, former prime minister of Pakistan, speaking at Hillsdale College, September 2002
