Dickson County Public Library and Life Long Learning Center Offers Wi-Fi Campus Network Designed by MOUStech.NET, LLC
The Dickson County Public Library and Life Long Learning Center announced during its Grand Opening and Open House the implementation of a wireless network for its patrons. During opening comments at the Sunday, July 21 Dedication Ceremony, Board of Trustees Vice Chairman Bernie Dunham stated that his company, MOUStech.NET, LLC, was sponsoring the Wi-Fi project for the new Life Long Learning Center, so that lap top owners could use their own equipment, software, and resources for online research and education. MOUStech.NET also is hosting the new Library website: www.dicksonpubliclibrary.org.
Currently connected to the Library's T1 line, the Wi-Fi network provides access speeds of 582 kbps. Very soon the network will be switched over to a dedicated cable access line with transmission rates of 3.5 mbps. MOUStech.NET set up the wireless LAN using 3COM AirConnect access points. The new Library building, the former BellSouth Building, has 18 inch concrete walls, so the Library feels the network is relatively secure from outside "access hackers."
A very informative web site on wireless networks for libraries is maintained by Bill Drew, of the SUNY Morrisville College Library, called the Wireless Librarian. Drew also has a very interesting set of slides online from a seminar at SUNY, The Wireless Library.
The Life Long Learning Center will start with a schedule of free online classes offered through the Manpower International "Global Learning Center." As the former Training Consultant for the Nashville Manpower Technical office, Bernie Dunham arranged for this first, and only, free public access to Manpower's online corporate training university, considered one of the largest in the world, with thousands of web based courses ranging from Microsoft to Linux, Cisco to Lotus Notes.
New Horizons is also offering its Online Anytime Learning selection of training courses for the first time in a public setting, although not for free. At a significant price reduction, the government rate, the 1200 online New Horizon courses are organized into "libraries." In purchasing a "library" of courses, users have one year of access to entire course systems, ranging from Harvard Business School to desk top publishing.
