Get unwired! Wired magazine's special issue on WiFi. Paul Boutin writes about this month's issue of Wired, to which we each contributed multiple items. Update: BoingBoing's founder Mark Frauenfelder was also a contributor!

The current issue of Wired mag includes a Wi-Fi primer, bundled as a 60-page mini-magazine that pops out to keep or, better yet, pass around. UnWired features articles on understanding the Wi-Fi landscape and setting up your own network. BoingBoing regular Xeni Jardin and I were both so enthusiastic about UnWired that we contributed two articles each.

Xeni explains our use of the radio spectrum as it is, and as it could be. I put aside my usual snobbery about doing how-to articles and business landscapes to hammer out a long getting started primer written with my family in Maine in mind. It lists specific products and services - Linksys, AirPort, Starbucks, Surf and Sip - that I know will work for those who follow the instructions, yet won't bankrupt families that can't rush out to buy a new laptop. Or businesses that can't splurge on T1 infrastructure. I also list "25 Companies to Watch," a cocktail party primer rather than an investment guide. Most of the blog-reading crowd will find much of this familiar material, so here's a suggestion: Buy Wired for Steve Silberman's Matrix story on the cover, but yank out UnWired and give it to someone who hasn't yet cut the Ethernet cord. Remember when you installed Mosaic for someone you loved back in 1994? It's that time all over again.  Boing Boing Blog

Librarians Use Shredders to Counter New F.B.I. Powers. "It used to be a librarian would be pictured with a book," said Ms. Snider, the branch manager, slightly exasperated as she hunched over the wastebasket. "Now it is a librarian with a shredder." Librarians in America, specifically those in Santa Cruz, California, have resorted to shredding nearly all documents or records of any sort in order to counter the United States' new Patriot Act (EFF critique), a law passed after 9/11 which significantly broadened the federal authorities' ability to tap into public information in the name of anti-terrorism. Many libraries have begun distributing leaflets to visitors which detail their objections to the increased F.B.I. power and explain that librarians are in the process of reviewing their files to ensure that any and all data they have about borrowing and computer usage histories is absolutely necessary to their operation.  kuro5hin.org

MacMania plans to offer ship-wide wireless Internet
by Dennis Sellers, dsellers@maccentral.com
January 22, 2001 7:00 am ET

In what promises to be a good thing for MacMania attendees, Geek Cruises' Perl Whirl II cruise conference, now underway, features the first ship-wide wireless Internet access for attendees.

This network will allow attendees to download conference files, communicate with speakers and other attendees, keep informed of any change in conference venues and participate in activities using state-of-the-art groupware. Plus, the wireless Internet link allows attendees to surf the Web, send and receive e-mail and transfer files to their own laptops using the ship's satellite connection.

Peace Blogs Added to the Index

I know that Feedster has quite a few "war blogs" regularly being indexed by Feedster  -- I wrote the automatic classification routines for the War Filter but it was unclear to me how many, if any, "peace blogs" were in there.  So via a pointer from Doc, I found Mark Pilgrim's list of Peace Blogs and made sure that all of the ones for which he points out RSS feeds are now indexed by Feedster.  Roughly 1/3 were already being indexed so that's something but I thought it best if they all were.

Note: I'm not getting into the whole war discussion here at all but I do think it important that a search engine cover both sides of things.

Wireless at Sea: A Report from the MacMania Alaska Cruise

by Glenn Fleishman
06/07/2002

On the recent Geek Cruises' MacMania conference, I mushed dogs, watched glaciers calve, and ate like a pig. But one of the best parts of the event was the convivial area network (CAN?) in the ship's library and nearby games room, made possible through Wi-Fi networking and a satellite link-up back to the Internet. (Another good part: I somehow lost two pounds. Must have been all the presenting.)

CAN: the Convivial Area Network

When Neil Bauman, CEO and "Captain" of Geek Cruises, and Bernie Dunham of MousTech.Net (no Web site) -- his one-man consulting firm, partnered to deliver wireless access during the conferences, they originally planned to offer it ubiquitously.

Dunham said, "The original project scope was to provide wireless not only over the conference center decks, but we were going to try to get all the cabin areas." After considering the cost and social impact, however, they decided to limit coverage to conference rooms and public areas.

Last fall's Perl Whirl was a free test of the wireless network system for Bauman, Dunham, and the attendees, many of whom said they would have liked to have access in their cabins. "I don't think so!" Bauman said. "Then they'll spend their time in their rooms."

Expensive Service

The cost to attendees and speakers for Wi-Fi access was $100 if paid early, and $150 aboard ship. Bauman said he was subsidizing the service, which cost him $200 per user because of high fees paid to the onboard Internet concessionaire.

Both Dunham and Bauman hope to negotiate better rates as they support and produce more and more cruises. Dunham would like to offer his services for more conferences at sea. So far, he's the only one he's aware of performing ship-by-ship site surveys and actually deploying and supporting wireless networks on cruise lines.

The metal lining of a ship and the resultant reflection make signal propagation a real issue. It's possible that 802.11g and 802.11a, with multipath signal reflection cancellation built into their higher-speed encoding, might perform substantially better. Dunham used a 3Com access point during this cruise, and Bauman said they have permission to run access points on the exterior of the ship to create a larger backbone. Some cruise ships also have interior Ethernet, making it easier to bridge larger networks.

On the Holland-America Line, the only cruise line where Bauman has held his events, the Internet concession is run by Digital Seas. Digital Seas' satellite service for its onboard Internet café ($25 per hour and up) is provided via Marine Telecommunications Network, although both are owned by the same corporate parent, Verestar. Yes indeed, the company is charging itself high rates.

Other lines, such as the Norwegian line, home of MacMania II in June 2003, have direct relationships with Marine Telecommunications, which may allow Dunham and Bauman more flexibility.

Reiter's Wireless Data Web Log

Spontaneous pontifications about wireless data and other personal musings "Forbes" magazine Top 5 Technology Weblog

WiFi, cruises, photography and a new Web site and Weblog to check out

As I've written previously, I'm getting involved in promoting the development of 802.11 on board cruise ships.  I makes a lot of sense.  I'm working with Bernie Dunham, a long-time IT expert who provided the WiFi infrastructure for Geek Cruises and its most recent MacMania cruise.  Bernie will continue to provide WiFi for Geek Cruises.

WiFi + cruises Web site and Weblog

Bernie has just posted a new Web site for his company, MOUStech.net, which includes information about his experience in WiFi and seminars that will use 802.11 on cruise ships.  MOUStech.net's business is providing WiFi for ships as well as coordinating appropriate seminars and workshops for cruise ships.

I'm going to be presenting a keynote address or two as well as conducting a multi-day seminar about wireless as part of the Caribbean cruise on Royal Caribbean's mammoth "Explorer of the Seas" cruise ship.  (Want to become a sponsor?  Contact me: reiter@wirelessinternet.com

There will be several seminars presented by different companies and speakers occurring during the Eastern Caribbean cruise, which is October 5 - 12, 2002.  A similar program (without me) will be for the Western Caribbean, October 12 - 19, 2002.

The MOUStech.net Web site is recent, and it's very definitely a work in progress.  Bernie also has started a MOUStech.Info Radio Userland Weblog, where there is more information about what he is doing professionally and personally.

Bernie is spearheading the efforts of implementing WiFi on ships, and I'm kind of tagging along on his coattails.  When you begin to look at offering wireless data on ships, you begin to see many, many interesting -- and useful possibilities.  I wrote last Thursday about how Philippe Kahn was sending photos, via satellite, of his sail boat race.  Wireless and photography will be a big business.

Wireless photography

Cruise ships should offer a variety of wireless and wireless photography services.  Offer passengers an opportunity to have their own photo page for posting images.  Offer passengers Weblogs to post their thoughts.  These can be teriffic "electronic postcards."  Actually they can be more like electronic letters back home, and passengers don't have to wait until their mail is posted on land.

Sell disposable (non-digital) cameras, develop the film and scan the images into the photo page and/or Weblog.  Sell cheap (or not-so-cheap!) digital cameras on board and offer classes about digital photography and about wireless.  (Disposable cameras already are sold on cruise ships; I don't know whether digital cameras are now being sold.)

Create splash pages for every cruises -- for the passenger's photo page and Weblog as well as for the ship's own information -- and sell advertising space on the pages to merchants in ports.  Obviously, you need to be careful and intelligent about where and how to include advertising.  Maybe everyone gets a photo page and Weblog that's free -- with advertising -- or ad-free pages for a small fee.

I e-mailed Bernie about the possibility of establishing photo kiosks on ships, and he said he previously discussed the idea with at least one conference organizer.

There's a business here!

I tell you folks, there are valid business models for using technology to provide passengers -- and merchants (on the ships and on land) -- with valuable and fun services.  I'm getting involved in this.  Good economy or bad -- there are opportunities to serve the public and generate income.  Only the idiots (i.e., many financial analysts) dismiss wireless communications today.

But you must ensure that all the links in the wireless data value chain are sufficiently strong!

Corresponding with Bernie has gotten some of my creative juices flowing, and he certainly is spearheading the WiFi-on-cruises concept.  It seems, too, that Weblogger extraordinaire and Linux Journal senior editor Doc Searls provided Bernie with some inspiration.

802.11 in libraries

Bernie does more volunteer work than anyone I know.  One of his many projects is installing WiFi in libraries, and you may read about it in his Weblog.  WiFi in libraries -- public and corporate -- makes a lot of sense, and I'd like to see more of it.  Bernie posts links to other sites with some good information about WiFi in libraries.  Well worth checking out.

[Note:  Despite what the Weblog indicates, this entry is being posted on Wednesday, July 24.  There will be more entries to come today.]

Wi-Fi on Campus II

Pete Kruckenberg sent me a reference to a Wired story on Wi-Fi on campus after reading my recent article. Pete says "Just like any other technology, Wi-Fi requires that the classroom dynamics and methods be changed to incorporate and use it. " One of the points that the article makes, and with which I agree wholeheartedly, is that there's no telling what will happen on campus when you give everyone access to ubiquitous wireless networking. College students are incredibly innovative and, contrary to what they commonly believe, have a lot of time on their hands to play around with the technology. Just one small example: last week when I was at the BYU CS department, there was a robot running around the third floor. It was using the building Wi-Fi for access, not some special connection. Its just part of the infrastructure that researchers count on now.

Readings in Theravada Buddhism

The Path to Freedom

An introductory self-guided tour of the Buddha's teachings, based on excerpts from the Pali Canon.

The Pali Canon

An outline of the Pali Canon (Tipitaka), including a selection of modern translations of over 800 important suttas, all indexed by sutta name, subject, proper names, and similes.

Theravada Text Archives

A library of some 200 books, essays, and transcribed Dhamma talks by masters from the Thai forest traditions, various authors from the Buddhist Publication Society, and other contemporary writers. Also included are Study Guides on selected topics of interest to students of Buddhism.

The three divisions of the Tipitaka are:

  • Vinaya Pitaka
The collection of texts concerning the rules of conduct governing the daily affairs within the Sangha -- the community of bhikkhus (ordained monks) and bhikkhunis (ordained nuns). Far more than merely a list of rules, the Vinaya Pitaka also includes the stories behind the origin of each rule, providing a detailed account of the Buddha's solution to the question of how to maintain communal harmony within a large and diverse spiritual community.
  • Sutta Pitaka
The collection of suttas, or discourses, attributed to the Buddha and a few of his closest disciples, containing all the central teachings of Theravada Buddhism. (Over eight hundred sutta translations are available on this website.) The suttas are divided among five nikayas (collections):
  • Abhidhamma Pitaka
The collection of texts in which the underlying doctrinal principles presented in the Sutta Pitaka are reworked and reorganized into a systematic framework that can be applied to an investigation into the nature of mind and matter.

Digha Nikaya

The Long Discourses

(selected suttas)

  • Samaññaphala Sutta (DN 2) -- The Fruits of the Contemplative Life {D i 47} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. King Ajatasattu asks the Buddha, "What are the fruits of the contemplative life, visible in the here and now?" The Buddha replies by painting a comprehensive portrait of the Buddhist path of training, illustrating each stage of the training with vivid similes.
  • Kevatta (Kevaddha) Sutta (DN 11) -- To Kevatta (Kevaddha) {D i 211} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. This discourse explores the role of miracles and conversations with heavenly beings as a possible basis for faith and belief. The Buddha does not deny the reality of such experiences, but he points out that -- of all possible miracles -- the only reliable one is the miracle of instruction in the proper training of the mind. As for heavenly beings, they are subject to greed, anger, and delusion, and so the information they give -- especially with regard to the miracle of instruction -- is not necessarily trustworthy. Thus the only valid basis for faith is the instruction that, when followed, brings about the end of one's own mental defilements. The tale that concludes the discourse is one of the finest examples of the early Buddhist sense of humor. [This summary provided by Thanissaro Bhikkhu]
  • Lohicca Sutta (DN 12) -- To Lohicca {D i 224} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. A non-Buddhist poses some good questions: If Dhamma is something that one must realize for oneself, then what is the role of a teacher? Are there any teachers who don't deserve some sort of criticism? The Buddha's reply includes a sweeping summary of the entire path of practice.
  • Maha-nidana Sutta (DN 15) -- The Great Causes Discourse {D ii 55} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. One of the most profound discourses in the Pali Canon, which gives an extended treatment of the teachings of dependent co-arising (paticca samuppada) and not-self (anatta) in an outlined context of how these teachings function in practice. An explanatory preface is included.
  • Maha-parinibbana Sutta (DN 16) -- The Last Days of the Buddha {D ii 72} [Sister Vajira and Francis Story, trans. (complete text) | Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans. (excerpt)]. This wide-ranging sutta, the longest one in the Pali Canon, describes the events leading up to, during, and immediately following the death and final release (parinibbana) of the Buddha. This colorful narrative contains a wealth of Dhamma teachings, including the Buddha's final instructions that defined how Buddhism would be lived and practiced long after the Buddha's death -- even to this day. But this sutta also depicts, in simple language, the poignant human drama that unfolds among the Buddha's many devoted followers around the time of the death of their beloved teacher.
  • Maha-samaya Sutta (DN 20) -- The Great Meeting {D ii 253} [Piyadassi Thera, trans. | Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. A large group of devas pays a visit to the Buddha. This sutta is the closest thing in the Pali Canon to a "who's who" of the deva worlds, providing useful material for anyone interested in the cosmology of early Buddhism.
  • Sakka-pañha Sutta (DN 21) -- Sakka's Questions (excerpt) {D ii 263} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. Sakka, the deva-king, asks the Buddha about the sources of conflict, and about the path of practice that can bring it to an end. This discourse ends with a humorous account about Sakka's frustration in trying to learn the Dhamma from other contemplatives. It's hard to find a teacher when you're a king.
  • Maha-satipatthana Sutta (DN 22) -- The Great Frames of Reference (The Great Discourse on the Foundations of Mindfulness) {D ii 289} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. This sutta offers comprehensive practical instructions on the development of mindfulness in meditation. The Buddha describes how the development of continuous mindfulness of the four satipatthana ("foundations of mindfulness," or "frames of reference") -- mindfulness of the body, of feelings, of the mind, and of mind-objects -- can lead ultimately to full Awakening. [The text of this sutta is identical to that of the Satipatthana Sutta (MN 10), except that the Majjhima version omits the exposition of the Four Noble Truths (sections 5a,b,c and d in part D of this version).]
  • Cakkavatti Sutta (DN 26) -- The Wheel-turning Emperor (excerpt) {D iii 58} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. In this excerpt the Buddha explains how skillful action can result in the best kind of long life, the best kind of beauty, the best kind of happiness.
  • Sigalovada Sutta (DN 31) -- To Sigala/The Layperson's Code of Discipline {D iii 180} [Narada Thera, trans.]. The householder's code of discipline, as described by the Buddha to the layman Sigala. This sutta offers valuable advice on how householders should conduct themselves in relationships with parents, spouses, children, pupils, teachers, employers, employees, friends, and spiritual mentors.
  • Atanatiya Sutta (DN 32) -- The Discourse on Atanatiya {D iii 194} [Piyadassi Thera, trans.]. One of the "protective verses" (paritta) that are chanted to this day for ceremonial purposes by Theravada monks and nuns around the world. See Piyadassi Thera's The Book of Protection (Kandy: Buddhist Publication Society, 1999).

Majjhima Nikaya

The Middle Length Discourses

(selected suttas)

  • Mulapariyaya Sutta (MN 1) -- The Root Sequence {M i 1} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. In this difficult but important sutta the Buddha reviews in depth one of the most fundamental principles of Buddhist thought and practice: namely, that there is no thing -- not even Nibbana itself -- that can rightly be regarded as the source from which all phenomena and experience emerge.
  • Sabbasava Sutta (MN 2) -- All the Fermentations {M i 6} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. The Buddha teaches seven methods for eliminating from the mind the deeply rooted defilements (sensuality, becoming, views, and ignorance) that obstruct the realization of Awakening.
  • Bhaya-bherava Sutta (MN 4) -- Fear & Terror {M i 16} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. What would it take to live in solitude in the wilderness, completely free of fear? The Buddha explains.
  • Vatthupama Sutta (MN 7) -- The Simile of the Cloth {M i 36} [Nyanaponika Thera, trans.]. With a simple simile the Buddha illustrates the difference between a defiled mind and a pure mind. [BB]
  • Sallekha Sutta (MN 8) -- The Discourse on Effacement {M i 40} [Nyanaponika Thera, trans.]. The Buddha explains how the unskillful qualities in the heart can be eradicated through meditation.
  • Sammaditthi Sutta (MN 9) -- The Discourse on Right View {M i 46} [Ñanamoli Thera and Bhikkhu Bodhi, trans.]. A long and important discourse by Ven. Sariputta, with separate sections on the wholesome and the unwholesome, nutriment, the Four Noble Truths, the twelve factors of dependent origination, and the taints. [BB]
  • Satipatthana Sutta (MN 10) -- Frames of Reference/Foundations of Mindfulness {M i 55} [Nyanasatta Thera, trans. | Soma Thera, trans. |Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans. ]. The Buddha's comprehensive practical instructions on the development of mindfulness. [The text of this sutta is identical to that of the Maha-satipatthana Sutta (DN 22), except that the latter contains a more detailed exposition of the Four Noble Truths (sections 5a,b,c and d in part D of that version).]
  • Cula-sihanada Sutta (MN 11) -- The Shorter Discourse on the Lion's Roar {M i 63} [Ñanamoli Thera and Bhikkhu Bodhi, trans.]. The Buddha declares that only through practicing in accord with the Dhamma can Awakening be realized. His teaching is distinguished from those of other religions and philosophies through its unique rejection of all doctrines of self. [BB]
  • Maha-sihanada Sutta (MN 12) -- The Great Discourse on the Lion's Roar {M i 68} [Ñanamoli Thera and Bhikkhu Bodhi, trans.]. The Buddha expounds the ten powers of a Tathagata, his four kinds of intrepidity, and other superior qualities which entitle him to "roar his lion's roar in the assemblies." [BB]
  • Maha-dukkhakkhandha Sutta (MN 13) -- The Greater Discourse on the Mass of Suffering {M i 91} (excerpt) [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. In this excerpt, the Buddha describes the drawbacks of the pursuit of sensual pleasures. Such pursuits invariably result in pain and unhappiness.
  • Madhupindika Sutta (MN 18) -- The Ball of Honey {M i 108} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. A man looking to pick a fight asks the Buddha to explain his doctrine. The Buddha's answer mystifies not only the man, but also a number of monks. Ven. Maha Kaccana finally provides an explanation, and in the course of doing so explains what is needed to bring the psychological sources of conflict to an end.
  • Dvedhavitakka Sutta (MN 19) -- Two Sorts of Thinking {M i 114} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. The Buddha recounts the events leading up to his Awakening, and describes his discovery that thoughts connected with sensuality, ill-will, and harmfulness do not lead one to Awakening, while those connected with their opposites (renunciation, non ill-will, and harmlessnes) do.
  • Vitakkasanthana Sutta (MN 20) -- The Relaxation of Thoughts {M i 118} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans. | Soma Thera, trans.]. The Buddha offers five practical methods of responding wisely to unskillful thoughts (thoughts connected with desire, aversion, or delusion).
  • Kakacupama Sutta (MN 21) -- The Simile of the Saw {M i 122} (excerpt) [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. The Buddha tells the story of a wise slave who deliberately tests her mistress's patience. The Buddha invokes several memorable similes here to illustrate how we should develop patience.
  • Ratha-vinita Sutta (MN 24) -- Relay Chariots {M i 145} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. Using the simile of a set of relay chariots, Ven. Punna Mantaniputta explains the relationship of the factors of the path to the goal of the holy life. [TB]
  • Maha-Saccaka Sutta (MN 36) -- The Greater Discourse to Saccaka {M i 237} (excerpt) [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. In this excerpt, the Buddha recounts his early meditation practices and austerities that led him finally to discover the path to Awakening.
  • Saleyyaka Sutta (MN 41) -- The Brahmans of Sala {M i 285} [Ñanamoli Thera, trans.]. The Buddha explains to a group of brahman householders how one's present actions -- by body, speech, and mind -- determine one's future fortune.
  • Cula-vedalla Sutta (MN 44) -- The Shorter Set of Questions-and-Answers {M i 299} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. Dhammadinna the nun fields a series of Dhamma questions put to her by her former husband: questions on self-identification, cessation, penetration into the true nature of feeling, and the attainment of Nibbana.
  • Cula-dhammasamadana Sutta (MN 45) -- The Shorter Discourse on Taking on Practices {M i 305} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. Is something right because it feels right? [TB]
  • Kukkuravatika Sutta (MN 57) -- The Dog-duty Ascetic {M i 387} [Ñanamoli Thera, trans.]. Act like a dog, and that's what you'll become. Choose your actions with care!
  • Abhaya Sutta (MN 58) -- To Prince Abhaya (On Right Speech) {M i 392} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. The Buddha explains the criteria for determining whether or not something is worth saying. This discourse is a beautiful example of the Buddha's skill as teacher: not only does he talk about right speech, but he also demonstrates right speech in action.
  • Bahuvedaniya Sutta (MN 59) -- The Many Kinds of Feeling {M i 396}. After resolving a disagreement about the classification of feelings, the Buddha enumerates the different kinds of pleasure and joy that beings can experience. [BB] [The text of this sutta is identical to that of SN XXXVI.19.]
  • Ambalatthikarahulovada Sutta (MN 61) -- Advice to Rahula at Mango Stone {M i 414} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. The Buddha admonishes his son, the novice Rahula, on the dangers of lying and stresses the importance of constant reflection on one's motives. (This is one of the suttas selected by King Asoka (r. 270-232 BCE) to be studied and reflected upon frequently by all practicing Buddhists. See That the True Dhamma Might Last a Long Time: Readings Selected by King Asoka, by Thanissaro Bhikkhu.)
  • Cula-Malunkyovada Sutta (MN 63) -- The Shorter Instructions to Malunkya {M i 426} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. Ven. Malunkyaputta threatens to disrobe unless the Buddha answers all his speculative metaphysical questions. Using the famous simile of a man shot by a poison arrow, the Buddha reminds him that some questions are simply not worth asking.
  • Aggi-Vacchagotta Sutta (MN 72) -- To Vacchagotta on Fire {M i 483} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. The Buddha explains to a wanderer why he does not hold any speculative views. Using the simile of an extinguished fire he illustrates the destiny of the liberated being. [BB] [For more on the use of fire imagery in early Buddhist texts, see the book Mind Like Fire Unbound.]
  • Magandiya Sutta (MN 75) -- To Magandiya {M i 501} (excerpt) [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. In this passage, the Buddha teaches a member of a hedonist sect about the nature of true pleasure and true health. [TB]
  • Ratthapala Sutta (MN 82) -- About Ratthapala {M ii 54} (excerpt) [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. In this excerpt, Ratthapala recalls four observations about the world that prompted him, as a healthy and wealthy young man, to leave the household life and become a monk.
  • Piyajatika Sutta (MN 87) -- From One Who Is Dear {M ii 106} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. King Pasenadi of Kosala figures prominently in many discourses as a devout follower of the Buddha. In this discourse we learn how -- thanks to Queen Mallika's astuteness -- the king first became favorably disposed toward the Buddha. [TB]
  • Canki Sutta (MN 95) -- With Canki {M ii 164} (excerpt) [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. A pompous brahman teenager questions the Buddha about safeguarding, awakening to, and attaining the truth. In the course of his answer, the Buddha describes the criteria for choosing a reliable teacher and how best to learn from such a person. [TB]
  • Sunakkhatta Sutta (MN 105) -- To Sunakkhatta {M ii 252} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. The Buddha addresses the problem of meditators who overestimate their progress in meditation. The sutta ends with a warning: anyone who claims enlightenment as license for unrestrained behavior is like someone who fails to follow the doctor's orders after surgery, who knowingly drinks a cup of poison, or who deliberately extends a hand toward a deadly snake. [TB]
  • Aneñja-sappaya Sutta (MN 106) -- Conducive to the Imperturbable {M ii 261} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. Advanced meditation instruction: how the fourth jhana and the formless attainments can be developed and used as a basis for the realization of Nibbana.
  • Ganaka-Moggallana Sutta (MN 107) -- The Discourse to Ganaka-Moggallana {M iii 1} [I.B. Horner, trans.]. The Buddha sets forth the gradual training of the Buddhist monk and describes himself as a "shower of the way." [BB]
  • Gopaka-Moggallana Sutta (MN 108) -- Moggallana the Guardsman {M iii 7} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. Ven. Ananda explains how the Sangha maintains its unity and internal discipline after the passing away of the Buddha. [BB] Interestingly, this sutta also shows that early Buddhist practice had no room for many practices that developed in later Buddhist traditions, such as appointed lineage holders, elected ecclesiastical heads, or the use of mental defilements as a basis for concentration practice. [TB]
  • Maha-punnama Sutta (MN 109) -- The Great Full-moon Night Discourse {M iii 15} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. A thorough discussion of issues related to the five aggregates. Toward the end of the discussion, a monk thinks that he has found a loophole in the teaching. The way the Buddha handles this incident shows the proper use of the teachings on the aggregates: not as a metaphysical theory, but as a tool for questioning clinging and so gaining release.) [TB]
  • Cula-punnama Sutta (MN 110) -- The Shorter Discourse on the Full-moon Night {M iii 20} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. How to recognize -- and become -- a person of integrity.
  • Isigili Sutta (MN 116) -- The Discourse at Isigili {M iii 68} [Piyadassi Thera, trans.]. The Buddha enumerates the many paccekabuddhas who lived on Isigili mountain.
  • Maha-cattarisaka Sutta (MN 117) -- The Great Forty {M iii 71} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. On the nature of noble right concentration, and its interdependence with all the factors of the noble eightfold path.
  • Anapanasati Sutta (MN 118) -- Mindfulness of Breathing {M iii 78} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. One of the most important texts for beginning and veteran meditators alike, this sutta is the Buddha's "roadmap" to the entire course of meditation practice, using the vehicle of breath meditation. The simple practice of mindfulness of breathing leads the practitioner gradually through 16 successive phases of development, culminating in full Awakening.
  • Kayagata-sati Sutta (MN 119) -- Mindfulness Immersed in the Body {M iii 88} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. This sutta serves as a companion to the Anapanasati Sutta [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. and explains the importance of establishing a broad awareness of the body in meditation to develop jhana.
  • Cula-suññata Sutta (MN 121) -- The Lesser Discourse on Emptiness {M iii 103} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. The Buddha instructs Ven. Ananda on the practice that leads to the "entry into emptiness," the doorway to liberation. [TB]
  • Dantabhumi Sutta (MN 125) -- The Discourse on the "Tamed Stage" {M iii 128} [I.B. Horner, trans.]. By analogy with the taming of an elephant, the Buddha explains how he tames his disciples. [BB]
  • Bhumija Sutta (MN 126) -- To Bhumija {M iii 138} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. Does the desire for Awakening get in the way of Awakening? According to this discourse, the question of desiring or not desiring is irrelevant as long as one develops the appropriate qualities that constitute the path to Awakening. The discourse is also very clear on the point that there are right and wrong paths of practice: as a geographer might say, not every river flows to the sea. [TB]
  • Bhaddekaratta Sutta (MN 131) -- An Auspicious Day {M iii 187} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. The Buddha emphasizes the urgency of putting forth effort right now to develop insight. Now is all we have, "for -- who knows? -- tomorrow death may come."
  • Cula-kammavibhanga Sutta (MN 135) -- The Shorter Exposition of Kamma {M iii 202} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans. | Ñanamoli Thera, trans.]. Why do some people live a long life, but others die young? Why are some people born poor, but others born rich? The Buddha explains how kamma accounts for a person's fortune or misfortune.
  • Maha-kammavibhanga Sutta (MN 136) -- The Greater Exposition of Kamma {M iii 207} [Ñanamoli Thera, trans.]. The Buddha reveals some of the subtle complexities in the workings of kamma. [BB]
  • Uddesa-vibhanga Sutta (MN 138) -- An Analysis of the Statement {M iii 223} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. How to attend to outside objects without letting the mind become externally scattered, and how to focus in strong states of absorption without becoming internally positioned. It's not easy, but it can be done. [TB]
  • Dhatu-vibhanga Sutta (MN 140) -- An Analysis of the Properties {M iii 238} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. A poignant story in which a wanderer, searching for the Buddha, actually meets the Buddha without realizing it. He recognizes his mistake only after the Buddha teaches him a profound discourse on four determinations and the six properties of experience. An excellent illustration of the Buddha's statement, "Whoever sees the Dhamma sees me." [TB]
  • Saccavibhanga Sutta (MN 141) -- Discourse on The Analysis of the Truths {M iii 248} [Piyadassi Thera, trans.]. Ven. Sariputta gives a detailed explanation of the Four Noble Truths.
  • Nadakovada Sutta (MN 146) -- Nandaka's Exhortation {M iii 270} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. Ven. Nandaka discusses impermanence with a large group of nuns, driving his point home with particularly vivid similes. It must have been an effective teaching: soon afterwards, these nuns all become enlightened.
  • Chachakka Sutta (MN 148) -- The Six Sextets {M iii 280} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. How the contemplation of the six senses leads to an understanding of not-self and, ultimately, to Awakening.
  • Maha-salayatanika Sutta (MN 149) -- The Great Six Sense-media Discourse {M iii 287} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. How a clear understanding of the six senses leads to the development of the Wings to Awakening and to final release.
  • Indriya-bhavana Sutta (MN 152) -- The Development of the Faculties {M iii 298} [Thanissaro Bhikkhu, trans.]. What qualifies as full mastery of the senses?
