If you want to keep up on the latest and greatest, this is a must have.  This new release offers some great new features from swing to web start.  Check it out.

If you are looking for a 'commuity' based open source package similar to PHPNuke, you may want to take a look at JLCP (java lobby community platform).  When completed it should be a fully complaint J2EE application - just load and run.  Best of all this is JAVA, not PHP!

Java Developer's Journal has this interesting article that suggests Java may be headed towards open source.
