floating and smiling

Six. Actually, 5.6. I clocked my "long loop" today and discovered that the run I thought was 6 miles is actually only 5.6. And the "short loop" I thought was 5 miles is actually only 4.6. I have an off-by-0.4 bug. This is very upsetting. (417 words) [ dive into mark ]

i catch myself smiling while running when i feel like i'm floating. this does not occur 100% of the run, just when my mechanics, posture, breathing and mental paradigm phase into a floating sequence. it reminds me of the feeling of lightness i used to have as a teenager bounding up stairs or clamboring over fences or leaping onto a horse. now that i'm fifty, when i struggle up onto the back of a horse i look down and say, "damn, it sure is a long way down to the ground." but i can still float when i run, some of the time. i always look forward to it.

i ran the boontling classic last spring. it's an out and back 5k course. after the turnaround we passed by all the participants going slower, first the runners, then the joggers mixed with the fast walkers, then the regular walkers, and last the very old and very young getting a bit of exercise on a sunny spring day. i was swapping jokes with my pal rob when two women strolling the other way said, "oh look, they're still smiling so it must not be too bad." [wr]

"The bottom line is I don't trust this president and his advisors". Not every Democrat has caved to Bush's martial fervor. Rep. Pete Stark makes it stunningly clear why he's voting against the Iraq war resolution. [Salon.com]
