Saw
Ani DiFranco last night at the Backyard
. Solo. Acoustic. Homey and loose. Intimate. Amazing.
The opening act, Toshi Reagon, was excellent too. (Judi's old friend Bethany came out from New York to see the show, following Toshi, not Ani). Toshi told a story of loving a woman she worked with ("ever had someone you see all the time walk in one day and look really... different? Like ... when did you get to be so cute!?!"); then cranked out a juicy, lustful tune. After setting up a heavy groove, she quipped: it's going to get wetter... ;->
Ani opened her set with the other side of the story and launched into a powerful songe of love, joy, and surrender. Toshi's name could be heard in her moans...
Later, Ani performed the poem Self Evident from her latest album So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter".
Rock on Ani!
The Backyard is a great venue.. Mellow. Plenty of trees. Good acoustics. Easy parking! 5 minutes home.... The equation for making it out to see live music just changed for the better. :-)
I like this town.
