Old Friends Redux Over the weekend I picked up some old back issues of The Defenders. The Defenders ran from 1972 to 1986 a time period covering just about most of my childhood and teenage years and into my early adulthood. I have lots of memories of reading this comic book as a pre-teen, then as a teenager. I had forgotten how well written some of the earliest issues of the comic were. Len Wein (the co-creator of the Swamp Thing) was the first writer on the book followed by Steve Gerber. Mr. Gerber later created Howard the Duck, a comic book that poked fun at other comic books. Both gentleman wrote some fun and captivating stories. Reading stories like these after all this time is like suddenly discovering your best friend from childhood has moved in next door to you.
