Today appeared my new net column on Apple vs. Microsoft in music business (in Finnish, Apple lauloi Microsoftin suohon). I discuss how the iTunes Music Store has managed to generate new markets, and how Microsoft is trying to catch up. And I speculate a bit on a possible alliance between Nokia and Apple. Who knows, perhaps this could happen?

This morning I finished the third edition of my book Solving Optimization Problems (in Finnish, Optimointitehtävien ratkaiseminen, third revised edition). Well, the book was almost ready two weeks ago, but I did some final proofreading, and caught a few typos. Next I'll have to make a web page for the book, and put the 245-page PDF file there for downloading. But this will probably happen next week.

Against Expanding Protections for Scientific Data: "ACM Council has approved a policy statement that opposes new restrictions on access and use of data collections, concluding that current US laws provide adequate protection for this information. In a unanimous vote that reflected the opinion poll results of ACM members, ACM's governing body said pending US legislation would create broad new legal protections on collections of data that negatively impact the availability and use of facts and ideas."
