![]() China's boom and doom: "China now produces tons of cheap clothes, electronics and raw materials -- and dizzying amounts of pollution beginning to taint the globe." [Salon] I just spent four nights and five days in Shanghai, and air quality was certainly the worst feature of the city. My throat was sore quite often when walking outside on the streets. But the boom is also apparent - new buildings rising everywhere, and the quality of living (and amount of spending) already quite high. What about five years from now, when more and more can afford to have their own cars?

![]() N.Y. lawmaker hopes to ban iPod use in crosswalks: "State senator's bill would make it illegal to cross the street tuned into portable electronic devices such as MP3 players and BlackBerrys." [CNET News.com - Digital Life] What is interesting here is that the proposal is summarized by the word "iPod", such as "NY bans iPods", while other devices would be affected as well. But, well, iPod seems to be THE icon for this time.
