This reminds me of that Ig Nobel-prize winning paper, Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments.' [Seb's Open Research]

Biotech Taps Ocean for Answers: "Scientists at Bell Laboratories say an ocean sponge grows thin glass fibers capable of transmitting light at least as well as fiber optics cables do. Materials scientists hope to take lessons from the glassy sponge to improve manufacturing methods." [Wired News]
