What were you doing March 5, 1992?
I was scrambling to client sites trying to prevent an infection by the much-hyped Michelangelo virus. Even had 2 different TV stations follow me around and do some bits on the news - Doctor Dan on the move!
There was hysteria about the virus that was to be unleashed on the anniversary of Michelangelo’s birthday (March 6th) because it was all new to the growing number of PC owners.
People were advised not to turn on their PC on March 6th if they didn’t have updated anti-virus software. The virus was predicted to be malicious - deleting data - and many millions were expected to be infected.
In reality, maybe because of the hype, only about 20,000 PCs were infected on March 6th - still a lot but nowhere near the prediction.
After that, from Melissa and the Love Bug all the way up to Slammer, the viruses weren’t the media event that Michelangelo was.
