Massachusetts Decision in favor of Open Document Format

Last week David Berlind wrote The History of the Massachusetts OpenDocument Decision, where he describes dramatically how he sees the story unfolded this year. He started:

Warning. If you read any further, you will find yourself at ground 0.0 of the biggest battle the computer industry has ever seen. It is where the biggest warriors from the proprietary software world, the open standards world, and the open source world are engaged in hand-to-hand combat.

The war metaphor continues through the article and the importance is high. Massachusetts makes greater software sales than some tiny municipality where this battle has played out before. Not only will the state be at stake but the numerous contractors and organizations that do business with the state. Massachusetts has a very large number of educational institutions so the use could spread to education.

Also a podcast on the same topic.
