Pay for Reading about Politics?

One Paper Hopes Fans of Politics Will Pay Up. The Sacramento Bee will introduce a new Web site focused on California government and state politics for $499 a year. By MARIA ASPAN. [NYT > Technology] In Sacramento, we've seen staff cuts at the local newspaper, and other changes. This annual subscription is too expensive for most people. Corporations and associations may pay it. I wonder if libraries can buy the subscription.

When I first start reading the London Times online, they had a subscription, but now that seems to be a thing of the past. The trend seems to be going to other way, to content supported by advertising.
