Great news! Dana Gioia appears to be headed for the chairmanship of the NEA (This may be the first decision of the Bush administration with which I wholeheartedly concur). You can read the news here and here. He's probably best known for his essay "Can Poetry Matter?", which first appeared in The Atlantic Monthly more than ten years ago, but I particularly like his collaboration as librettist with composer Alva Henderson on the opera Nosferatu, excerpts of which I saw at Richard Wilbur's 80th birthday celebration at West Chester 2000. You can see it this November 1st and 3rd at the University of Tennessee at Chatanooga Fine Arts Center.
