Paradise Briefly Regained
I'm getting old and fat and stiff except
Where fat and stiff might actually do some good,
And there I'm getting old and more inept
Although I've practiced every chance I could—
Not often enough, not lately. "Often enough"
Might quickly turn to "never," since my wife
Lives many miles from here and she is tough—
An Army sergeant I've trusted with my life.
But last night in the lights, my mandolin
A dream of music, hot and sweet, and there,
Dancing so close that I could see her skin
Slipping from under her clothes into the air …
I'll take that blesséd vision back with me;
I'll share it; she will have the eyes to see.
