Saw some software for Unix today that stores settings in a directory called 'var'. Way to go guys, why didn't you use 'temp'? (can't tell you which software, might get into trouble ;-) )

Another short Solaris tip: use '/usr/ucb/ps' to get more information about a process, e.g.
/usr/ucb/ps uawx | head
gives you the top ten CPU users
