Something that took me a while to figure out while using DocBook. This is probably something most DocBook users are doing in a reflex, but anyway, here it is:
To hand over parameters in the Makefile/Command-line to fop use --stringparam fop.extensions 1 in xsltproc.
The other parameter that came handy was --stringparam paper.type A4.
Really simple, but I couldn't figure it out in the beginning, now my PDFs are looking great. ;-)
