Being a consultant myself, read this article called "The Problem, the Balloon, and the Four Bedroom House", read it now!
I couldn't agree more. In the bitter reality though, most of the time it boils down to politics. Never, I repeat NEVER get involved in company politics as a consultant. If an occurrence, like the one described in the article, should happen, do as the article suggests and wait what happens. There are usually two scenarios:
  1. The owner of the project agrees to rework the planning to accommodate the changes.
  2. The owner of the project accuses you not to have done your homework.
If scenario two comes into effect, you have two choices:
  1. You really want to do the project, gnash your teeth and try to accomodate.
  2. You realize this will be a never ending story regarding inherent and inevitable changes in the last minute. You try to charge for the work done and run for your live.
OR you try to make secret choice three: figure out if the owner of the project is really the owner or someone to be pink-slipped for the planned failure of the project. (Then you have to run as well, of course).
