Text Messaging API over HTTP - Any standards?

In porting our interactive-messaging solution to various aggregator interfaces and gateways, it is apparent that there is no standard for a text messaging interface over HTTP. Some vendors use simple GET whilst others use POST and some use XML, others not (usually non XML-RPC or SOAP, which as I commented before is probably an overkill anyway).

Anyone out there know of a standard being promoted or interested in formulating one, I'd be happy to hear from you.
