Just bought this from Amazon. I'm interested as I planned to write a similar book. Let's see what this one is like first.

GPRS and 3G Wireless Applications: Professional Developer's Guide - For experienced software developers, Andersson, a specialist in Internet technology, explains the technical issues that underlie the development of software and content for wireless networks and devices. He discusses how General Packet Radio Services and third-generation systems have evolved, how they affect applications, and how to work with existing and emerging protocols. The disk contains WAP development kits, emulators of several mobile devices, testing templates, and Java SDKs. (Review supplied by Amazon) -- UK Readers Click Here to order

GPRS is unable to pay for lunch [ZDNet]

Snippet:

......"He noted that the revenue brought in by GPRS among the four Denmark network operators in the past year amounted to only about 23,000 euros (roughly £14,000), which would not be enough to pay for the lunches of the engineers that installed the GPRS equipment."

O dear! But the value of the article is in the suggestions for content-sensitive billing. A simple idea that has so far - amazingly - escaped the operators attention. I thought these ideas were well known, apparently not. Can't say that the billing systems don't exist for content-based billing - isn't that what the Internet is supposed to be all about? The same applies for location-sensitive content. I wrote extensively on this topic in a report done for MetroWalker location service provider in Hong Kong.

Mighty Nice: FusionOne Unveils Wireless Sync Service [Think Mobile]

Entering contact information on a mobile phone can be a tedious task. FusionOne, a San Jose, Calif.-based software developer, seeks to simplify matters with MightyPhone, a new wireless synchronization service.

This type of service has been offered so many times before, and each time dies out....that I can't believe someone's trying it again. Considering this service only supports one model of phone initially, seems like another false start to me.

3G and Wi-Fi: Will they Ever Get Together? [Think Mobile]

One has distance, the other has speed. Together, they could make a pretty sweet pair -- if they can make the relationship work not just technically, but financially.

Palm and RIMM pull a Microsoft
The two troubled PDA makers are licensing their operating systems as their hardware businesses crumble.

By Dave Sterman, equity research columnist

If it worked for Microsoft (MSFT), it can work for us.

That's the logic behind the changing business strategies at Palm (PALM) and Research in Motion (RIMM). Just as Microsoft won the PC wars of the 1980s by licensing its operating system, these firms are placing more emphasis on licensing their proprietary operating systems and less emphasis on their hardware offerings.

Whether they'll succeed is an open question. Click here to read more.
