:: Location-finding capabilities of GSM used to convict Soham murderer ::

The tragic case of the two girls murdered in Soham (UK) was solved in part using the location-finding capabilities of GSM. When a mobile is switched off, it reports that fact to the network before switching off entirely. This "disengage" signal was traced from one of the murdered girls' phones to a particular base station mast. It so happened that the disengage signal was registered with a base station that did not serve the area where the girls went missing, except for a few patches of coverage, one of them being the spot where the murders took place. More details can be found on the BBC website.
