The Greatest Victim of Spam is the Medium Itself

Jimmy Guterman, editor of Media Unspun, writes in Business 2.0 that Spam is tangibly disaffecting email newsletters.   He summarizes a Nielsen Norman Group report, and quotes "Future of Email Newsletters": "There may be none. Legitimate use of email is at war with spam, and spam may be winning."  In addition, "newsletters lost 22% of potential subscribers due to usability difficulties in their subscription processes and designs."

What's really interesting about Guterman's take is the implied increase of alternative modes of communication as the quality and efficiency of email declines.  A BCG study found signficant growth in alternative modes of communication:

Use of new communications technologies expected to rise in 2002

Perhaps most importantly, over 80% of the companies surveyed said they expect to maintain or increase spending in communication technologies.  Seems F1000 companies do believe in saving employee's time.
