I've mentioned Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/) in previous postings; it's a much more diverse online source of free ebooks than the Free Library--both resources have their special values.
Project Gutenberg's ebooks can be viewed online or downloaded for reading. "Project Gutenberg is the oldest producer of free electronic books (eBooks or etexts) on the Internet. Our collection of more than 15.000 eBooks was produced by hundreds of volunteers. Most of the Project Gutenberg eBooks are older literary works that are in the public domain in the United States. All may be freely downloaded and read, and redistributed for non-commercial use ...."
I subscribe to Project Gutenberg's rss feed of recently posted or updated ebooks and saw this charming title appear this week; the title is more evocative than the contents, but there is a quaint interest in reading about the world events of the late 19th century. The Great Round World contains selections from the Philadelphia Times compiled as a weekly newspaper for "boys and girls" (and teachers) available in 1897 for an annual subscription of $2.50; this selection in Project Gutenberg includes one issue. Examining writings from more than a hundred years ago about the "Great Round World" provides a smaller picture than we see of the world on the Internet today, but in some ways the news of wars, racial conflicts, politics, floods, and other events is not so different. ____JH
