EduResources Weblog--Higher Education Resources Online
This weblog focuses on locating, evaluating, discussing, and providing guidelines to instructional resources for faculty and students in higher education. The emphasis is on free, shared, HE resources. Related topics and news (about commercial resources, K-12 resources, T&D resources, educational technology, digital libraries, distance learning, open source software, metadata standards, cognitive mapping, etc.) will also be discussed--along with occasional excursions into more distant miscellaneous topics in science, computing, and education. The EduResources Weblog operates in conjunction with a broader weblog called The Open Learner about using open knowledge resources across a diversity of subjects, levels, and interests for a wide range of learners and learning communities--students in schools and colleges, home schoolers, hobbyists, vocational learners, retirees, and others.

This short posting from the CampusContentNews reports on interesting findings regarding the use of learning objects within a Training and Development setting and speculates about how these results might (or might not) transfer to university settings. _____JH

Learning Object Models: reviewed

"I reviewed some of the more popular models for learning objects regarding their educational integrity. The conclusion that I came to is that there are models for learning objects, which integrate theories of systematic instructional design (esp. Cisco Systems and NETg). These models seem to be successful as well. Cisco Systems stated that before using the learning object approach, they took nearly nine months to develop a course; with the learning object approach, however, they reduced that time to eight to twelve weeks! Cisco Systems unites 150 internal and external authors, who produced 130 courses, 2,500 lessons, and 20,000 reusable learning objects (date of figures: 2002). The foundation for this success is a well laid out guideline for the development of learning objects from Cisco’s view. They also heightened motivation among their employees by incorporating a visible reward sytem for continuing education."
