Elvin Jones, 76 When I saw Mr. Elvin at BlueNote in 90s, made a point to shake the hand of the man who shook John Coltrane's hand. When we saw him in the 00s, my son did the same. Jake said the hand was tired - I credited it perhaps to "musician's handshake -careful on the fingers" - or to the fact that he'd played a nonstop 40 minute set of prodigious athleticism. Anyway, he looked so healthy I couldn't believe he died so soon. Of course, it wasn't athleticism he was known for, but for brining out the music of drums, and multiplying the rhythms and making a big ongoing roll of the whole thing. A key officer in the army of futurism this way passed. Seemed a great spirit.
