House unemployment 26 week benefit extension does not include Utah
The US House of Representatives voted to extend jobless benefits for 13 weeks for workers exhausting state benefits this year. 43% of unemployment insurance recipients in the US have exhausted their state benefits, the highest level on record. The bill provides an additional extension of 13 weeks for high unemployment states Alaska, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Washington. Utah is not included in this additional extension. Utah is 18th in the nation in unemployment, with a rate of 5.8% as of March.

States Get Medicaid Tax Relief
Amerigroup, a multi-state managed health care company focused on communities receiving health care benefits through publicly sponsored programs, breaks down state savings resulting from a portion of the newly passed Tax package that provides $10 billion in fiscal relief for states. Utah should receive a total of $117 million dollars.

Federalized National Guard Worrisome to States

The Nation highlights a tension between Federal deployment of troops on the domestic front and state governments. According to Commision of Public Safety Bob Flowers, Utah officials fought to keep the state's National Guard under state control but the White House authorized deployment of regular armed forces to utah. Flowers says the issue goes to the essence of our constitution. The National Governors Association has issued a policy paper stating its preference that the Guard be kept under state control.
