Readers divided over what will be the top ebook growth influence "During the next five years, will technological advances encourage more people to pick up an electronic version of their favorite novel? Will publishers and merchants find compelling reasons to cut prices? Could having more ebook titles available spur interest in ebooks? If the results from a recent ebook.com poll are any indication, then the answer to all three questions might be “yes.” Of the 557 readers who responded to the poll asking what factor will most influence ebook growth during the next five years, just over 26 percent chose technology. In a statistical dead heat, slightly more than 25 percent suggested that the price of ebooks would be most significant. And nearly 28 percent of respondents indicated that the number of ebook titles available was most important.Perhaps the seeds for addressing all three factors have been planted during the past year or so. Consider the fact that advances in Palm reading devices and the introduction of the Tablet PC are all expected to encourage more ebook reading. Or, if price is an issue, then sites like ebooks.com are doing their part. On its home page recently, the majority of its featured ebooks were priced less than $10. That’s reasonable for any pocketbook. And while many books are still not available in electronic format, publishers like HarperCollins are re-publishing previously released works by popular authors as ebooks.Although a common complaint is that ebook reading devices are too expensive, only 14 percent indicated that the price of ebook reading devices is the most important factor. Finally, copyright issues—which certainly hold the attention of publishers and authors—was chosen by less than 6 percent of respondents."
