Just finished hacking some Perl scripts for work. In the process I was flipping back and forth between my TiBook and a Windows machine. On the Windows box I tried out ActiveState's Komodo. If you're not familar, Komodo is an IDE for Perl, Python, TCL, PHP, and XSLT. I liked it. My Perl was quite rusty so it was handy to be able to watch variables in the debugger. I really like the Regular Expression Toolkit. A much better way to get to what you want than running and rerunning.

Alas, for some reason Komodo is only available on Windows, Linux, and Solaris. (Surely there is a bigger market on MacOS X than Solaris.) I prefer developing on the TiBook, so I was excited to see mention of LateNight Software's Affrus. It is only for Perl, and I don't think it has nearly the breadth of features of Komodo, but it runs on MacOS and, thus, inherits Emacs keybindings. (That really bugged me on Komodo. I'm sure I could have changed them, but it didn't jump out at me, and I didn't feel like taking the time to find the way.)

The Affrus beta just became available for download today. I've just peeked at it, but it seems pretty good so far. I'll probably pick up a license barring anything unforeseen.
