Wireless Alexandria

Today, Alexandria launched public wireless internet access from market square.  I am writing this posting from market square near City hall.  For a very low cost we can provide tourists and residents with simple, convenient Internet access.  This isn't a a secure network though.  You shouldn't do your personal or commercial business on this.  That wouldn't be a good idea if you are interested in preserving your privacy.

For a very low investment (a few thousand dollars), the City can provide this unique service.  But there is more to it than residents and tourists.  The City plans to test how this technology can be used to provide services to the City more efficiently.  For example, the wireless network may be set up to send a signal to the City when lights are out or a trash can is full.  This type of resource management means we can put resources where they are most needed at any time.  Ideally, we wouldn't have to send people to check street lights, trash cans or park lights.  Instead, the wireless network would send a signal to the City whenever something needs to be repaired or upgraded.

This is the kind of innovative approach to governemnt services that can provide benefits for residnets and ultimately save the City time and money.

All Around Us

Often the strength and promise of a community or an individual is right before our eyes.  Too often we ignore it.  Imagine what is possible for all of us if we take the time to see it.  This story makes that point far better than I could.  http://www.temple.edu/about/temples_founder/acres_text.html
