Creating a Killer Product

Max Spiller, who I met at PloneCon, is a real marketing guy, meaning he's studied it at university and done it professionally. I enjoyed talking with him about product marketing and positioning. He pointed me at this Forbes article which treats the subject with common sense.

"People don't want to buy a quarter-inch drill. They want a quarter-inch hole." What a wonderful point, and related to the newer maxim about "it fits your brain". Open source products are also governed by these rules, even if we show a certain disdain for the grubby world of marketing.

PloneCon: Yeh, It Rocked

An overdue word of thanks to triple A (Alan, Andy, and Alex), plus Alma and the other organizers, for a wonderful Plone Conference in New Orleans. Much high attendance than expected, even though they closed registration a week in advance. (Meaning, another 50% could have showed up). As it was, every session have nearly every seat filled.

This conference had a cool vibe, reminiscent of the early Zope tracks at Python conferences. People were eager to learn, eager to meet others, and had interesting things to share.

A special kudo goes out to Real, who provided free streaming for the proceedings. At one point we had over 800 people watching out in Ploneland. Now that's pretty groovy. In fact, some sessions featured questions coming in from #plone in IRC.
